I'm following a flamenco course on dvd (oscar herrero, flamenco paso a paso) and herrero's thumb is not in a 90 position when playing falsetas, it's rather something like 30.

Oscar Herrero series is very good for beginners.

As for learning the "right way", again, that is not something that you should worry about. Not everyone's hand or other physical attributes are the same. So there is no right way.

There is a "right sound" and that's the flamenco sound. Lots of people play differently and get a good flamenco sound. So don't preoccupy yourself with that too much.

Although, you should find a master guitarist whose hand shape resembles yours and pay extra close attention to how they play (even if they are not your favorite guitarist) and try to see if you are holding your arm/hand at the same angle as their.

One more note on the angle of the thumb... when you are playing arpeggios, the thumb is not at 90 degree angle... it's more like 30, like you said... but if you are doing alzapua or rest-stokes with the thumb, then yes, try to get it as close as possible to 90 degree.
